Antiaging HealthBy R. Drysdale Antiaging health advice usually includes lots of encouragement to eat a healthy diet and engage in a regular exercise program. The standard description of a good diet advises lots of vegetables and fruit, high fiber, low fat, low sodium - whole foods when possible. regular exercise means about 30 minutes of physical activity preferably five days a week. A healthy lifestyle also includes a good multivitamin and, of course, no smoking. This standard antiaging health regimen sounds simple but for many seniors, its not so easy. it often seems that the healthy foods are also the most expensive, and good fresh fruits and vegetables may not be available close to home. Similarly, it costs a lot to join a gym and even if you do join, you may have to travel some distance to get there. If you dont drive, this entails additional expense. You can walk for exercise of course, but 21st century communities seem built for cars, with few sidewalks and hazardous crosswalks. Furthermore, if you havent been living an antiaging health lifestyle up until now, switching to one late in life can seem very strange and disorienting. The food may seem disappointing at first, and the motivation to get up and go out for that half hour of exercise can be difficult to summon. Quitting smoking is notoriously difficult and requires real committment. Swallowing that multivitamin is the easiest part of the new routine. By all means, take the multivitamin for antiaging health and go on from there. Introduce new foods slowly. Many of us are used to fatty foods, salty foods, and foods containing lots of sauces and flavorings - weve forgotten what whole foods really taste like. Try vegetables by themselves, raw and cooked, and discover how each tastes - you may be pleasantly surprised at the range of natural flavors. If obtaining fresh vegetables is a problem, stock up on the ones that keep relatively well, like root vegetables, and buy other vegetables frozen. Introduce whole grains slowly too - these too have distinct natural flavors that you will probably come to love. For exercise, think about what you like to do. Perhaps youd enjoy walking with your dog, or someone elses. There might be a park nearby where you can take the dog to play. If walking outside isnt possible, you could use a treadmill while you watch the evening news. Is there a swimming pool nearby? Most community pools offer exercise classes or free swims - even swimming lessons! If your neighborhood is not too hilly, you might ride a bicycle (or even a stationary one inside). Gardening is good exercise too, or you can spruce up your house with vacuuming and dusting - it all counts toward the antiaging health routine. Whatever changes you make in your lifestyle, make them slowly and take the time to appreciate the incremental improvements in your health. Some things will take time, but over the long term, youll feel better and enjoy life more. Start with the multivitamin, but dont stop there. before you know it, your antiaging health routine will seem like the way you were always meant to live. About the Author: R.
